Abstract

Memantine is an uncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist and thus relies on glutamate’s activation of the NMDA receptor to take effect. Designed to block pathological levels of glutamate activity, Memantine prevents damage caused by excitotoxicity and permits the maintenance of physiological glutamate activity, so it can be used for treatment of Alzheimer.
The present study was conducted to throw light on the adverse effect of Memantine and the protective effect of Vit.E and to show the result of the combination between Memantine and Vit.E on nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity induced by Memantine in rats.
Experimental design:
After one week of acclimatization, eighty albino rats randomly allocated into 4 equal groups, each of 20 rats.
First group (control): rats in this group were not medicated and served as a control and received normal saline.
Second group (Memantine): rats in this group received oral doses of Memantine (0.36mg/kg, P.O. once daily) for successive 21 days.
