Abstract

Background: As clinical information systems have become more commonly used in
clinical practice, a specialty in nursing has emerged: nursing informatics. Clinical
information system is a top priority for health care organization. The aim, of this
study was to examine the effectiveness and feasibility of integrating nursing
informatics technology in the application nursing process. Design: A quasiexperimental
design was used (study and control). Setting: The study was carried out
at Faisal University Hospital and Military hospital in Jeddah-Saudi Arabia. Subjects:
A convenience sample of 300 nurses working in the study settings who eligible to the
inclusion criteria. Eligible subjects were randomlyassigned to either study or a
control group. Study group: was received and applied the intervention. Instruments: 1)
a self-administered questionnaire to assess socio-demographic data and nurse’s
knowledge and attitude towards nursing process and nursing informatics, 2) an audit
sheet/observational checklist to assess the effectiveness of the integrated intervention
related to activities in the nursing process and 3) an opinionnaire to assess nursing
satisfaction toward the feasibility of the intervention of the practicing nursing
informatics. Results: most of studied nurses have poor knowledge (80%) about
nursing process before intervention, which was reversed to 77% who had high
knowledge score after intervention. Also regarding nursing informatics the finding
represented that, 66% of the studied nurses had poor knowledge about informatics
before intervention, which was reversed to 60% who had high knowledge score after
the intervention. Conclusions: the current study highlights the positive impact of
integrating nursing informatics into nursing process. The intervention was effective in
improving knowledge, attitude and practices about nursing informatics, reduce the
negative attitude about nursing informatics, computer science and electronic health
record.Recommendation:
 Maintain continued education and training for nurses about nursing
informatics.
 Nursing administrators should a assist nurses to take computer and informatics
course and provide support, both financial and human resource.
