Abstract Background: As clinical information systems have become more commonly used in clinical practice, a specialty in nursing has emerged: nursing informatics. Clinical information system is a top priority for health care organization. The aim, of this study was to examine the effectiveness and feasibility of integrating nursing informatics technology in the application nursing process. Design: A quasiexperimental design was used (study and control). Setting: The study was carried out at Faisal University Hospital and Military hospital in Jeddah-Saudi Arabia. Subjects: A convenience sample of 300 nurses working in the study settings who eligible to the inclusion criteria. Eligible subjects were randomlyassigned to either study or a control group. Study group: was received and applied the intervention. Instruments: 1) a self-administered questionnaire to assess socio-demographic data and nurse’s knowledge and attitude towards nursing process and nursing informatics, 2) an audit sheet/observational checklist to assess the effectiveness of the integrated intervention related to activities in the nursing process and 3) an opinionnaire to assess nursing satisfaction toward the feasibility of the intervention of the practicing nursing informatics. Results: most of studied nurses have poor knowledge (80%) about nursing process before intervention, which was reversed to 77% who had high knowledge score after intervention. Also regarding nursing informatics the finding represented that, 66% of the studied nurses had poor knowledge about informatics before intervention, which was reversed to 60% who had high knowledge score after the intervention. Conclusions: the current study highlights the positive impact of integrating nursing informatics into nursing process. The intervention was effective in improving knowledge, attitude and practices about nursing informatics, reduce the negative attitude about nursing informatics, computer science and electronic health record.Recommendation: Maintain continued education and training for nurses about nursing informatics. Nursing administrators should a assist nurses to take computer and informatics course and provide support, both financial and human resource. |
