Abstract

The aim of this study was to find the extent to which Hello series of English fulfils the needs of the visually impaired pupils in the upper primary stage. It is a descriptive evaluative study, in which EFL textbooks are evaluated in the light of a suggested criteria list. The criteria has been developed by the researcher based on the new trends of visually impaired education. The jury members validated the criteria list. The ’Hello’ textbooks were evaluated using content analysis technique. Results showed the ’Hello’ series is short of meeting the desired standards set for complying with the needs of visual impairment. That curriculum designers developed these textbooks mainly for sighted pupils and changed them into Braille version with minor modifications. A suggested framework was designed to guide designers in the future. The main findings indicated that the ’Hello’ series do not comply with needs and learning characteristics of visually impaired pupils. As a conclusion, EFL textbooks addressing the visually impaired pupils need to concentrate on the real needs of these pupils to help them go on with their study.
