Abstract

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
In this study, three Schiff bases were synthesized by the reaction of 3-
amino-1,2,4-triazole and three aldehydes namely: salicyldehyde, anisaldehyde
and vanillin. The chemical structures of the obtained Schiff bases were
confirmed using elemental analysis, infra red spectroscopy and proton nuclear
magnetic resonance.
The results of the analysis confirmed the expected chemical structures of
the prepared Schiff bases as follows:

The synthesized Schiff bases were evaluated as corrosion inhibitors against
the dissolution of carbon steel in acidic medium using weight loss and
potentiodynamic measurements. Also, these compounds were evaluated as
antimicrobial agents against the growth of gram positive and gram negative
bacteria using inhibition zone measurements and minimum inhibition
concentrations.
The results of the corrosion inhibition measurements showed that these
compounds act as efficient corrosion inhibitors. these compounds decreased the
corrosion rate of carbon steel in acidic medium. increasing their concentration in
the medium decreases the carbon steel dissolution considerably.
The chemical structure of the prepared inhibitors has a major influence on
their inhibition efficiency. vanillin derivative exhibited the maximum inhibition,
while salicylaldehyde and anisaldehyde showed comparable inhibition
efficiencies to each other.
Potentiodynamic polarization measurements showed that these inhibitors
act as mixed type inhibitors. the mixed type of these inhibitors indicate that

these inhibitors decreases both the cathodic and anodic reactions, which
efficiently decreases the carbon steel dissolution and consequently protect the
carbon steel surface in the acidic medium.
The antimicrobial activities of these compounds showed their high
tendency towards inhibiting and preventing the growth of the gram positive and
gram negative bacteria and fungi
