Abstract Chronic liver disease is a progressive destruction of the liver parenchyma that results in fibrosis and cirrhosis which is irreversible end stage leading to liver failure with no effective treatment. Hepatic fibrosis is caused by a variety of chronic liver injuries due to various etiologies (viral, toxic, metabolic, and autoimmune). Thioacetamide (TAA), a selective hepatotoxin, which induces acute and chronic hepatic injury through its extensive metabolism to TAA-S-oxide, sulfene and TAA-S-dioxide by mixed function oxidase system. TAA-S-dioxide is a very highly reactive compound which binds to tissue macromolecules inducing hepatic necrosis and oxidative stress. |
