Abstract

Aggressive periodontitis, as the name implies is a type of periodontitis where there is rapid rate of destruction of periodontal ligament and alveolar bone which occurs in otherwise systemically healthy individuals generally of a younger age group.
YKL-40, an acute-phase protein, is a novel potential inflammatory marker. It is a member of ”mammalian chitinase-like proteins” but has no chitinase-enzymatic activity. It is secreted by activated neutrophils and macrophages in acute or chronic inflammation.
The changes in the GCF constituents could be used as a potential marker in the periodontitis progression. Thus, the evaluation of GCF YKL-40 might enhance the understanding of pathogenesis of different periodontal disease.
The purpose of the present study was to assess the level of YKL-40 in samples of GCF from aggressive periodontits patients before and after non surgical periodontal treatment and compare to healthy control.
The study included 40 patients divided into two groups:
group (A): Twenty patients were participated in this study with aggressive periodontitis non medically compromised and were subjected to Supra & Sub gingival scaling and root debridement.
group (B): Twenty patients were participated in this study as a control group, with healthy periodontium.
