Abstract

The thesis explores the possibility of representing certain traumatic experiences – 9/11 and war in Iraq – in three different plays by three different writers within the theoretical framework of literary trauma theory in its pluralistic model. By tracing evidence for the possibility of representing these experiences in charles Dumas’ 9/11 – A Day in the Life of A People (2008), Sean Huze’s The Sandstorm, Stories from the Front (2004), and Ellen McLaughlin’s Ajax in Iraq (2008), the thesis tries to defy the common belief held by the classic model of this theory about the unrepresentability of trauma and show that psychic wounds are, sometimes, worse than physical ones. Chapter One focuses on the development of the concept of trauma from the field of psychology into that of literature and the debate between the two models of literary trauma theory. Chapter Two analyzes charles Dumas’ play 9/11 – A Day in the Life of A People (2008) which traces the impact of the traumatic experience of the attacks of 9/11 on the American people before, during, a year later, and seven years after the attacks. Chapter Three tackles the experience of the Iraq War as affecting the American soldiers in general a year after the attacks as shown in Sean Huze’s play The Sandstorm, Stories from the Front (2004), and as afflicting the American female veterans in particular five years later as shown in Ellen McLaughlin’s Ajax in Iraq (2008). The traumatic experiences presented in the plays under-study are traced starting from points of what may seem to be unspeakable or unrepresentable to points of full representation, where they are eventually claimed or understood.
