Abstract This study was designed to throw a light on the incidence of Listeria species in poultry meat and poultry meat products in Zagazig city as well as detection the virulence genes beside its pathogenicity by detection of listeriolysin O virulence gene and 16S rRNA gene. So a total of 100 samples collected from different shops in Zagazig city 20 each of breast, thigh, liver and 10 each of wings, gizzard, heart, burger. Over all (53%) 53 of 100 of samples were positive for listeria spp., 60 % of breast samples , 40% of thigh samples, 50% of wings samples, 70% of liver samples, 50% of gizzard samples, 30% of heart samples and 60% of burger samples were positive for listeria spp. High prevalence rate of Listeria monocytogenes was found in liver samples followed by breast and burger samples. The Listeria isolated showed beta haemolysis on sheep blood agar and positive CAMP test and further identified using PCR. PCR of isolated Listeria monocytogenes strains: from the isolates of Listeria monocytogenes suspected strains isolated from the poultry meat and poultry meat products, the reaction confirmed that the isolates belonged to Listeria monocytogenes that contain species-specific genes 16S rRNA and they were virulent strains that contain the virulent- specific genes , Listeriolysin O ,( hly A). This suggested that they were potentially pathogenic strains which responsible for human listeriosis. |
