Abstract There is no doubt that peptic ulcer is the most annoying gastrointestinal ailments nowadays. A lot of interest is given for improving new medications for prevention and treatment of this disease with lesser or no side effects. Indeed, great attention is paid for herbal medicine in this aspect. Cyperus rotundus and Matricaria chamomilla have been known to be natural alternatives for treatment and prevention of many disorders including gastrointestinal diturbances. The present study has been carried out for evaluation of gastroprotective effects of ethanlic and aqueous extracts of both Cyperus rotundus and Matricaria chamomilla against piroxicam induced peptic ulceration. These effects were tested through measuring of mean ulcer score, ulcer index and preventive index. The results were confirmed by heamatological, biochemical and histopathological changes. The Experimental design was as follows: 1- Prophylactic model: Thirty five adult male albino rats were devided into 7 groups: 1st group: (control group): Rats in this group were left as control, given normal saline 1ml/100g bw orally. 2nd group: (Piroxicam group): After 24 hrs of fasting, rats received piroxicam 30 mg/kg bw orally. 3rd group: Rats received ranitidine 150 mg/kg bw orally, one hour before piroxicam administration 30 mg/kg bw orally. |
