Abstract The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different concentration of NaCl (0.0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mM NaCl) on germination, growth and some physiological activities of two Faba bean cultivars (Vicia faba CV Sakha3 and CV Nobaria3) presoaked with either H2O as (reference plants) or in 3 mM KNO3 in order to improve the growth and physiological performance of two cultivars under desired salt stress conditions. 1-Seed germination: both cultivars were decreased by increasing salinity, but Seed Presoaking resulted in a remarkable increase in final germination percentage especially in cultivar Sakha3. 2-Growth: Salinity reduced both fresh and dry weight of two broad bean cultivars, Seed presoaking resulted in fresh and dry weight enhancement in both cultivars. A-In cultivar Sakha3 the plants adapted to salt stress by increasing the leaf area especially those plants presoaked in KNO3 and by increasing root length. B-In cultivar Nobaria3 the plants withstand salt stress by increasing pigments, proline and k+/Na+ ratio. |
