Abstract The incorporation of sustainabiJity principles into project design and operation processes has been profoundly changing the construction industry. This change caused an increasing number of projects to pursue a green certification, such as the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method Rating System (BREEAM) and Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS). Sustainable development in urban expansion is required in Egypt in order to relief the population pressure. The emergence of many informal settlements without any urban planning presents a serious problem, in addition to the shortage in electrical power supply, the lack of water resources and the environmental impacts associated with the current situation. Although the presence of the GPRS, the community is still suffering from environmental problems due to the lack of awareness and the difficulty in dealing with this rating system. As the application of GPRS needs great experience in the field of environmental assessment, it is also needs a lot of time in addition to the absence of solutions, suggestions or recommendations to improve the environmental performance of buildings. Consequently, the research recommended the. application and implementation of Green building rating systems to facilitate and encourage the investors, professionals and researchers to apply this green building rating system. The aim of this study is to develop as a tool that can assess the new construction projects during design and post construction stages by green building and provide recommendation that leads to increase the project rating and recommends improvement strategies. A case study is presented in order to validate the proposed rating systems and some improvement strategies have been applied to increase the final rating of the project. |
