Abstract Background: Cognitive impairment (CI) amongst hemodialysis (HD) patients raises safety concerns, while limiting their ability to understand information such as medical advice and their decision-making ability. Unfortunately, the data available on assessment of cognition in HD patients and interventions utilized remain extremely limited. Aim of the work: To evaluate the cognitive functions in HD patients Patients and Methods A total of 45 HD patients were included in the study, they were subjected to detailed medical history, full clinical examinations, and laboratory investigations, carotid Doppler was done to evaluate atherosclerosis, battery of cognitive function tests to assess different cognitive function Results: 71.1% (n=32) of studied patients were normal, while 28.9% (n=13) showed mild cognitive impairment, Working memory is the most affected cognitive function in our studied patients (86.7%). significant positive correlation between serum K level and different cognitive functions in HD patients was reported. Conclusions: Clinicians should carefully monitor and treat cognitive impairment in HD patients. Further studies are required to determine the reasons for cognitive impairment in HD patients. |
