Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at Abo-Saied Village, Kafr El-Sheikh Center, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt, during 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 seasons to study the effect of plant population and distribution and nitrogen fertilizer levels on growth, yield components, yield and quality of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) cv. Zwan poly. Each field experiment was carried out in split-plot design with four replicates. The replicate of each experiment included eighteen treatments comprising, six plant population and distribution patterns and three nitrogen fertilizer levels.Regarding the effect of plant population and distribution i.e. D1- Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 80 cm width and 25 cm between hills, resulting 42000 plants/fad, D2- Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 80 cm width and 30 cm between hills, resulting 35000 plants/fad, D3- Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 80 cm width and 35 cm between hills, resulting 30000 plants/fad, D4- Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 100 cm width and 20 cm between hills, resulting 42000 plants/fad, D5-Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 100 cm width and 24 cm between hills, resulting 35000 plants/fad and D6- Planting on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 100 cm width and 28 cm between hills, resulting 30000 plants/fad on growth and yield components (number of leaves/plant, total weight of plant, root fresh weight/plant, foliage fresh weight/plant, root length and root diameter), yield quality parameters (total soluble solids ”TSS %” in roots, sucrose percentage, apparent juice purity percentage, extractable white sugar percentage, white sugar yield/fad, loss sugar percentage and lost sugar yield/fad) and yields (root yield/fad, top yield/fad, sugar yield/fad and harvest index), it was significant in the two growing seasons.2. Effect of nitrogen fertilizer levels:With reference to the effect of nitrogen fertilizer levels on growth and yield components (number of leaves/plant, total weight of plant, root fresh weight/plant, foliage fresh weight/plant, root length and root diameter), yield quality parameters (total soluble solids percentage ”TSS %” in roots, sucrose percentage, apparent juice purity percentage, extractable white sugar percentage, white sugar yield/fad, loss sugar percentage and lost sugar yield/fad) and yields (root yield/fad, top yield/fad, sugar yield/fad and harvest index), it is apparent from obtained results that each increase in nitrogen fertilizer levels was accompanied with significant effect in all studied characters in both seasons.3. Effect of interaction:Results indicated that there was insignificant effect due to the interaction between both studied factors (plant population and distribution and nitrogen fertilizer levels) on all studied characters of this study, with exception root yield/fad in both seasons. It can be concluded that planting sugar beet Zwan poly cultivar on the two sides of terrace (mastaba), 80 cm width and 25 cm between hills, resulting 42000 plants/fad and mineral fertilizing with 115 kg N/fad in order to achieve high productivity and root quality under the environmental conditions of Abo-Saied Village, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt.
