Abstract

Aim of the study:
The current study aimed to assess the factors associated with accidents among older adult.
Subjects and Methods:
I. Research Design.
This is a descriptive analytical study will be used in order to explore the factors leading to accidents in older adult.
2- Research Setting.
The study was conducted at geriatric outpatient clinic of Ain shams University Hospital as it is considered a medical center which provides health care for a large sector of older adult in all over Cairo governorate.
3- Research Subjects.
A purposeful sample was used from the pre mentioned setting, with a total number of 135 (average of prevalence 3 years of older adult attended the outpatient clinic
II. Technical Design
Tools of data collection. four tool were used for
Data pertinent to the study variables was collected through.
Tools of Data Collection:
First tool:
• An interviewing questionnaire for older adults patients was constructed by the investigator based on reviewing of related literature and expert opinions and was written in a simple Arabic language. This tool included the following parts.
(a) Socio-demographic characteristics of older adult regarding gender, age, marital status, job, level of education and monthly income.
(b) Assessment of older adult health status as regard hypertension, diabetes mellitus, strock,respiratory problem,cardiac diseases, renal disease, liver disease and osteoporosis .
(c) Assessment of older adult life style.
(d) Assessment older adult’s knowledge about factors causing accidents.
(e) Physio-functional assessment tool that was be adopted from Ebersol, et al. (2005) which cover all the activities of daily living.
Second Tool:
Home environment observation check list was used for assessing the older adult home environment. It was covering indoor environment, stairs, roads, the house in general, the bed room, kitchen, the bath room and the storage, This tool was adopted from. Zastocki and Roviniski (2011) and conducted through home visit to accessible fifty homes .
Third Tool:
Physical examination of older adult included BMI, skin, oral cavity, vision, hearing, neck & chest, musculoskeletal and genitourinary systems The Investigator used the scale room, thermometer, and stethoscope sphygmomanometer.
- Hypotension blood pressure when lower than 120/80 mmHg.
- Hypertension blood pressure when 140/90 mmHg or higher.
InBMI was calculated according to the following equation:
Weight in kilogram /height in meter.
• Normal<25
• Over weight = 25
• obesity = 35
Fourth Tool:
Record analysis was used in order to identify accident types, treatments and investigations performed.
Content validity:
The tools were tested through three expertises from community health nursing department.faculty of nursing Ain Shams University.
Recommendations:
Based on the results of the present study. suggest the following recommendations are suggested:-
1. There a need for leaflet include information about accidents rehabilitation care to older adult post discharge from gertartic clinic.
2. In order to reduce older adults accidents there are a needs for regular exercise, check eye glasses yearly, make their home safer and improving the lighting in their homes.
3. First aid training should be provided to older adults families as essential needs in emergency of home accidents.
4. There are needs for follow up care for the prevention of post accidents complications.
5. The older adult and their families should be informed about community resources specialized in equipments can be used post accidents occurence.
6-Assistive devices for activity of daily living are needed to facilitate mobility and safe participation in home environment.
7-Further research about availablity of Assisstive devices and safety measures in older adult home to prevent accidents.
