Abstract

Background: Large doses of oxytocin may cause water retention, hyponatraemia, myocardial ischaemia, seizures and coma. Furthermore, a long duration of labour induction or augmentation due to use of oxytocin decreases the efficacy of labour induction as the sensation of myometrium decreases gradually and inversely with duration of oxytocin infusion and also increases complication rates.
Aim of the work: As expected, discontinuation of oxytocin infusion will prolong the duration of the active phase of labour. Yet neither this will affect expected maternal and fetal outcome, it need to be investigated.
Patients and methods: This study was conducted at the labour ward of Ain Shams University Maternity hospital between JAN 2017 and AUGUST 2017. It is a double blinded randomized controlled trial included 200 pregnant women who subjected to either labour induction or augmentation.
Results: Primi continous: Primi cases had continus oxytocin infusin. Multi continous: Multi cases had continus oxytocin infusin.Primi discontinous: Primi cases had discontinus oxytocin infusin. Multi discontinous: Multi cases had discontinus oxytocin infusin.
Conclusion: the findings of our study suggest that discontinuing oxytocin infusion once the active stage of labor is established is effective, resulting in a high rate of vaginal delivery, and safe, with no severe adverse maternal and fetal or neonatal outcomes.
