Abstract

Background: Multi drug resistance is now emerging worldwide at an alarming rate among Gram negative bacteria, causing both community-acquired and nosocomial infections . Carbapenemases-producing Enterobacteriaceae are increasingly reported worldwide in urinary tract infection occurring during pregnancy.
Aim of the work: The aim of this study is to detect genes producing cabapenemases responsible for carbapenem resistant in commonest bacteriacausing gestational pyelonephritis.
Material and methods: Cross sectional study where bacterial strains was isolated from midstream urine samples from hundred pregnant women with gestational age between 18-36 weeks with clinical symptoms of acute pyelonephritis, fever≥38°C, costovertebral pain, and dysuria with significant bacterura (bacteruria ≥10) regardless gestational age required hospital admission in period from January to June 2017.
Results: This study showed that 37 isolates were found to be resistant for Carbapenem having at least one carpabenemase producing gene using real time PCR.
Conclusion: WE have shown an increase in carbapenemase producing. Enterobacteriaceae over period of study with close to 37 % of all isolates received . conventional methods coupled with molecular genotypic testing for the detection of carbapenemase producing strains is more definitive and
therefore advantageous.
