Abstract Water Shortage is a world wide problem, where 40% of the world population is suffering from water scarcity. In Egypt, due to the existence of semi dry climatic conditions and limited available water resources, optimization and saving of water consumption have vital importance. The main goal of this research was to investigate the effect of the partial rootzone drying irrigation (PRD) on yields and other parameters, and to compare to the conventional irrigation (CI) when applying the same amount of water. Field experiment was carried out in the experimental farm of faculty of Agriculture, Menoufia University, Shibin EL-Kom during (Summer Season 2015- Winter Season 2016), to evaluate the PRD irrigation regime under Egyptian condition. Two irrigation regime ( CI and PRD), with three amount of water under (Covering and non-Covering condition) were studied. The measured parameters, which were affected due to the variation in the studied factors, were soil moisture, salt distribution, plant length, leaf area, crop yield and biomass, water use efficiency, and some properties of fruit to evaluate the fruit quality. The obtained results under Egyptian condition recommended PRD regime, also covering system on winter season. The PRD treatment achieved the best of moisture distribution in soil, decreasing of salt concentration, higher length, higher leaf area and weight of fruit. Finally the PRD improved the irrigation water use efficiency (WUE) and increased the percentage of marketable yield compared to the CI methods, especially when applying it under deficit water. Key word: Conventional irrigation – Partial root zone irrigation –Tomato- Water use efficiency- Deficit irrigation. |
