Abstract

Diabetic foot is a common complication of Diabetes mellitus which has major adverse effects on the quality of life and the physical ability of the patient. It also has a great economic burden on the patient and on the community.
Our study aimed to calculate the cost of diabetic foot when treated according to the guidelines and compare it to the cost of not receiving the optimal treatment.
To achieve this goal we collected the data from two groups of patients, group A consisted of 50 patients who were treated according to the guidelines and group B who did not receive the optimal treatment according to the guidelines. We calculated the cost of the treatment and the cost of complications for each group and the results indicate that treating diabetic foot according to the guidelines is cost saving and for every Egyptian pound we invest in this treatment we save four and a half Egyptian pounds.
