Abstract

Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma is the most common lymphoid neoplasm and accounts for approximately 25 percent of all non- Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Over 180 million people worldwide are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), a hepatotropic and potentially lymphotropic virus. HCV infection frequently leads to chronic hepatitis and is a major cause for liver cirrhosis and its sequelae such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics and outcome in DLBCL patients with and without HCV infection. Patients included in the current study comprised 57 males (63.3 %) and 33 females (36.6 %). They presented with B symptoms (34.4 %), lymphadenopathy (77.8 %), hepatomegaly (25.6 %), liver cirrhosis (10 %) and splenomegaly (53.3 %). Regarding the laboratory data in the studied patients, LDH was found to be profoundly increased. In respect to the prevalence of HCV in the studied patients, the current study found that HCV was +ve in 46 patients (51.1 %) as detected by ELISA while PCR analysis could detected HCV viremia in 29 patients (32.2 %). In the current study, comparison between HCV+ve and HCV–ve patients regarding the clinical data revealed no statistically significant differences regarding patients’ age, gender, B symptoms, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly.
