Abstract

Background: intensive care unit(ICU) Scoring systems allowed an assessment of the severity of disease and death prediction. As ICU populations ,investigations and management were changed, scoring systems should be updated. Aim of work: To evaluate three scoring systems in predicting outcome in Al - Abbasia chest hospital RICU (respiratory intensive care unit) patients in six months. Patients and methods: It was conducted on newly admitted cases in Al- Abbasia RICU from July 2016 till January 2017.All patients were evaluated on admission and after 48 hours by APACHE IV (acute physiology and chronic health evaluation), SOFA(sequential organ failure assessment) and SAPS II (simplified acute physiology score). Results: APACHE IV and SAPS II scores were significantly higher between died than lived patients on admission and after 48 hours but not able to predict death in ICU. SOFA score was insignificant higher on admission and after 48 hours between non survivals. None of the three scores could predict length of stay in ICU. Conclusion: APACHE IV, SAPS II and SOFA scores couldn’t predict neither death nor length of stay in ICU.
