Abstract

Background: Children undergoing hemodialysis therapy face many problems due to either the disease itself or its management. These children need support to overcome their physical, psychological and social problems. Aim of the study: The present study was a descriptive study which aimed to assess needs and stressors of children undergoing hemodialysis therapy. Setting: The study was conducted at hemodialysis unit at Ismailia University and Ismailia General Hospitals. Sample: A convenient sample of 70 children undergoing hemodialysis therapy from both genders, their ages ranged from 3-15 years. Mothers of the studied children were included whenever necessary. Tool of data collection: A structured interview questionnaire sheet. Results: Indicated that more than half of the studied children were males and more than two thirds of children were in the age group of 12<15. The great majority of the studied children had their environmental needs at low levels. About 87.1% of the studied children had moderate level of physical needs. It was found that 78.6% of children perceived psychological stressors as moderate stressors. Conclusion: Two thirds of the studied children had moderate level of total needs score. Psychological stressors were the most perceived stressors followed by physiological then social stressors as moderate stressors, while stressors related to management therapy were considered severe stressors. Recommendation: It was recommended to conduct ongoing assessment of needs and stressors to meet needs, reduce stressors, and provide support to the affected children, their mothers and families.
