Abstract Fatigue is a frequent symptom shared by almost all patients on long-term dialysis in (75%) (Horigan et al., 2012). Depending on the severity of fatigue, sometimes patients can’t perform their activities of daily living as; eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (walking), continence, or can only do so to a lesser degree (Gift and Pugh, 2010). Intradialytic exercises increases the waste removal thereby reducing fatigue and increasing the potentiality for performing their daily activities (Bamini, 2014). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercises on fatigue and activities of daily living among patients undergoing hemodialysis. Setting: The study was carried out at hemodialysis unit of Menoufia University Hospital. Subjects: A purposive sample of 160 adult hemodialysis patients were selected and divided alternatively and randomly into two equal groups. 80 patients for each group (study - control). Study group (I): taught and performed intradialytic exercises along with routine hospital care. Control group (II): exposed only to routine hospital care only. Tools of the study: four tools were utilized for data collection Tool 1: Structural interview questionnaire. Tool 2: Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS). Tool 3: Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).Tool 4: Observational checklist. The main findings of the present study were There was a significant improvement of total knowledge score among study group I than control group II one and two months post intervention. There was a significant improvement in the total fatigue score among subjects of study group I than control group II one and two months post exercises intervention There was a significant improvement in the total daily living activities score for subjects of study group I than control group II one and two months post exercises intervention . Conclusion Total fatigue and activities of daily living scores were significant improved among hemodialysis patients who performed intradialytic exercises (study group) than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care (control group). Recommendation Supervised health education about importance of performing intradialytic exercises should be carried out for all hemodialysis patients to alleviate their fatigue and activities of daily living and a colored booklet about theses intradialytic exercises should be available and distributed to all hemodialysis patients. |
