Abstract

Depression is a common disease caused by different reasons. Many anti-depressant drugs are used in the treatment of this disease such as lithium carbonate, carbamazepine, lamotrigine, valproate and asenapine. Most of these drugs have many side effects on some body organs of both human and experimental animals. They also cause many embryological malformations.
Lithium compounds are used as a psychiatric medications. Lithium carbonate is used as mood-stabilizing drug, primarily in the treatment of bipolar disorder, where it has a role in the treatment of depression and particularly mania. It was reported to cause many side effects on some body organs and embryos of human and animal models.
Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) is used as traditional medicine and natural food additive. It has been shown to exert significant antiatherogenic, antidiabetic, antianorexic, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antihyperlipidemic, and anti-inflammatory effects in both human and several animal models.
The present study aimed to investigate the histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical effects of fenugreek seed extract against the toxicity induced by lithium carbonate in liver and kidney as well as some biochemical parameters in sera of pregnant rats in addition to embryonic studies.
