Abstract

Summary
The present study aim was to evaluate the effect of clinical simulation versus traditional laboratory training on nursing students’ level of competence. To achieve the study objective a comparative quasi experimental study design has implemented at conducted at Maternity neonatal clinical Lab. in faculty of nursing, Ain Shams University.
A convenient sample of two hundred students were included in the study, those students were divided into two equal group (simulated g and traditional) at the previously mentioned settings.
Data collection has been carried out throughout the period from beginning of october2013 till the end of march 2014. It has been done through four tools (a self-administered questionnaire sheet, Student’s knowledge assessment tool, practical skills assessment tool, Attitude assessment tool).
In addition to educational video “Supportive material” about immediate postpartum assessment for simulation group and demonstration on doll for traditional group.
The present study revealed that:
 About 70% of simulated group has not past experience while 60% of traditional group has past experience,

66.7% of them has past experience in private hospital represented 43.3% in intensive care unit.
 The current study showed No significant difference between the two groups regarding past clinical experience
 Concerning satisfaction regarding different aspects of training the only significant difference was observed in the status of training by simulation 98% of the simulation group reached satisfactory agreement compared to 58% of the traditional group with highly statistical significance differences between them.
 Concerning student attitude regarding teaching methods the study showed there is highly statistically significance differences between two groups regarding satisfaction with current method (p value =0.003) and self confidence in current method.
 Regarding student practical skills the present study showed that there is highly statistically differences between the two groups regarding their practical skills.
 Regarding student level of knowledge the current study illustrated that there is a highly statistical significance differences between simulated group and traditional group regarding their level of knowledge.

Based on the current study findings, it concluded that:
 Clinical simulation as a Teaching method has a positive effect on students‟ level of competence concerning student level of knowledge, student attitude in form of self confidence and satisfaction with teaching method also there was significance differences regarding practical domain between two groups, with considering variables that may affect teaching process.
Based on these study findings the researcher recommended; Integrating Clinical simulation as a teaching method in student teaching curriculum.
 Further research is needed for investigating the effect of clinical simulation on student performance in real clinical settings situations.
 Further researches are needed to evaluate the effect of simulation versus other types of teaching methods on student level of competence
