Abstract

Children are the most important segments for nation, and future of society, mothers are guardian of that future, and knowledge of mothers has an important role in the maintenance of nutritional status of the children. Nutrition of the under-five children is of paramount importance because the foundation of our life time health, strength and intelligence vitality is laid during this period.
Nearly 50.6 million children under five are malnourished and 90% of these children belong to developing countries.
This study is a prospective case control study, that was carried out from March 2013 to December 2015 at Children& Maternity Minia University hospital. The study included 50 children and their mothers who were enrolled from nutrition rehabilitation unit and from the general clinic of the same hospital.
Our studied children group were subjected to history taking, examination, and mothers were tested for psychiatric morbidities and cognitive function using symptom checklist 90 revised &mini mental status questionnaire respectively.
We found that severe malnutrition were present in 88% of malnourished group, malnutrition affected by parental education, parental working status, family income & surrounding environmental sanitation.
Evaluation of mothers by symptom checklist 90-revised detected somatic, obsessive compulsive, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, psychoticism disorders, grand total, global sensitivity, positive symptom distress indices significantly affects children malnutrition status with strong correlations between indices.
Maternal mental status (cognition) of malnourished children were impaired (44%) with no significant correlation with child nutritional status, while mothers of healthy children showed normal mental status (92%).
