Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which the body immune response attacks the central nervous system leading to demyelination. It is one of the commonest causes of chronic neurological disability in young and middle aged people.
MS as a disease still offers fundamental challenges to scientific understanding in terms of etiology and pathogenesis. MRI offers a unique in-vivo investigative tool, and has already provided some insight into the pathological processes and pathogenic mechanisms associated with MS. MRI plays an important role in the clinical management of multiple sclerosis. MRI is important for accurate diagnosis of MS, understanding its prognosis, detecting the cause of clinical disability, monitoring the disease activity and monitoring treatment.
The current thesis describes the relative merits of several MRI parameters in their suitability for evaluation of MS affection of the brain. Systematic application and proper knowledge of different MRI techniques is required to elucidate the relationship of the qualitative and quantitative measures derived with evolution of the disease.
