Abstract
Sustainable development is the primary objective shared by developed and developing countries as well. Energy is the interconnection between the three dimensions of sustainable development; economic growth, environmental security and social wellbeing. Energy is a driver for modern economic development. It also represents a source of foreign currency associated with fuel exports. Achieving energy security has become an objective shared by developed and developing counties as well
Egypt is one of the countries suffering energy crisis. It has long been facing the challenge of achieving security of electricity supply. In 2014, the electricity demand in Egypt was 27,700 MW, 20% above the power production capacity. In order to satisfy this increasing energy demand, two important measures should be carried out in parallel; the first is to direct the society towards energy conservation and loss reduction, and the second is diversifying the energy sources and exploiting the renewable resources. Increasing conventional energy supply has not become a viable option because continuous reliance on the predominant conventional energy sources (natural gas and oil) threatens energy security and raises serious environmental problems. In terms of economic opportunities to develop other sources of generating electricity, Egypt has no coal; nuclear power suffers from its high capital costs and the very long time needed for setting up a program and building plants. Deploying clean energy alternatives is only path to meet the increasing energy consumption as well as achieving environmental protection.
