Abstract

The present study was designed to evaluate cervical vertebral morphology in different skeletal Classes of malocclusion using cone beam computed tomography ”CBCT” imaging. The present study was carried on 30 patients (21 males and 9 females) who didn’t undergo any previous orthodontic treatment, they were adult patients of Egyptian origin, the patients of this study were selected from the outpatient clinic of the orthodontic department; Faculty of dentistry, Suez Canal University, with age range more than 18 years and without any congenital anomalies of the craniofacial structures. The patients were divided into three groups:-A. First group (Skeletal Class I group): with ANB angle ranging from (1:3) and included 5 males and 5 females.B. Second group (Skeletal Class II group): with ANB angle more than ”3” and included 9 males and 1 female.C. Third group (Skeletal Class III group): with ANB angle less than ”1” and included 7 males and 3 females. The morphology of the atlas vertebra C1 in different skeletal Classes was evaluated on CBCT image using eight linear measurements and one angular measurement.A. Linear measurements:1. HOAPC1: which represents the horizontal outer anteroposterior diameter of the first cervical vertebra (C1) measured in millimeters.-2. HIAPC1: which represents the horizontal inner anteroposterior diameter of the first cervical vertebra (C1) measured in millimeters.3. HOTDC1: which represents the horizontal outer transverse diameter of the first cervical vertebra (C1) measured in millimeters.4. Outer margin: which represents distance between outer margin of transverse foramen and outer margin of lateral mass in millimeters.5. Superior surface: which represents anteroposterior diameter of superior surface of C1measured in millimeters.6. LOAPC1: which represents lateral outer anteroposterior diameter of C1 measured in millimeters.7. Dorsal arch: which represents the height of atlas dorsal arch measured in millimeters.8. FOTDC1:which represents the frontal outer transverse diameter of C1 measured in millimeters.B. Angular measurements1. Dens angle:which represents the angle along axis line of the dens to occlusal plane and measured in degrees. The following conclusions could be drawn from the current study:1. Our study confirmed past findings that cervical vertebral morphology varies among individuals with different anteroposterior skeletal patterns.2. This study found that there was no significant difference in terms of dorsal arch height among individuals with different anteroposterior skeletal patterns. 3. There were significant differences between ”HOTDC1”,”LOAPC1”, ”Superior surface” and ”Dens angle” among individuals with different anteroposterior skeletal patterns.4. The measures that were found to be significantly increased in Class III patients and decreased in Class II patients relative to Class I.
