Abstract

The aim of our research is to provide a brief overview of the main characteristics, sources and health effects of ultraviolet radiation by studying the effect of it on biophysical properties of the blood, functions of some organs such as Kidney and Liver, molecular and ultra-structured of skin and eye, DNA and protein and cell cycle regulating. Special wood box 60x60x60 cm (W x L x H) was designed to perform the experiments. Mice were divided into four groups comprising 20 mice in each. group (A) as a control group, Groups (B and C) as irradiated groups for one and two hours daily for one month and recover group (D). UVC radiation was produced by three “Sylvania G15W” ultraviolet lamps in 15 Watt powers for each one and in 45 cm length, placed to the internal top surface of the wood box. Our results show that:-1.There is a significant effect of ultra-volute C radiation on the viscosity of blood and its components. Viscosities of each of the blood and plasma are increased due to exposure to UVC radiation but Osmotic fragility value is decreased. Also exposure to UVC radiation can cause increase serum AST, ALT, ALP, total bilirubin and decrease serum albumin in mice.2.In mice skin, there was loss of the epidermal layers with intact basement membrane associated with invagination into the dermis. After recover the epidermal layer and the underlying dermis were intact while the invagination still present.3.In mice eye, there were degeneration and necrosis in the covering epithelium of the cornea associated with destruction of the underlying basement membrane and stromal while the endothelial cell layer showed focal hyperplasia of the inner endothelial cell layer. After recover vacuolar degeneration was detected in the corneal epithelial layer, while the endothelial corneal layer showed hyperplasia with polyp’s formation.4.Ultra-violet increased DNA expression in cells. It induced a significant increase of DNA synthesis phase in cells after exposed for one hour, two hours during month and after recovery compared to controls.5.Ultraviolet C radiation induced a significant increase in pattern and amount of protein synthesis in cells, apoptosis in cells, cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 in cells and cell cycle synthesis phase in cells after exposed for one hour, two hours and after recovery compared to controls.
