Abstract

Bladder exstrophy is one of the rare congenital anomalies in which the bladder wall is turned inside out, so that the ureteric orifices and the interior bladder wall are exposed. The urethra and external genitalia are not completely formed. Bladder exstrophy is managed surgically in a single stage or multiple stages. These stages include closure of the bladder and abdominal wall defects, bladder neck reconstruction, and epispadius repair. The Mitchell repair was developed as a single stage for repair of bladder exstrophy and consisted of bladder closure with bladder neck reconstruction and epispadius repair, through the complete disassembly technique, preferably performed during the neonatal period. The aim of our study was to evaluate the early outcome after one stage (Mitchell) repair of bladder exstrophy as regard to the wound healing, bladder capacity, renal functions and satisfaction of the parents to cosmetic shape of abdominal wall and external genitalia. This study was conducted on ten male patients presented with bladder exstrophy admitted to Pediatric Surgery Unit in Tanta University Hospital in neonatal period for two years (from September 2013 to September 2015). All cases were repaired as one stage then the follow up schedule included clinical, laboratory and radiological examinations.
