Abstract

Acidic foods and beverages are consumed daily and is becoming an important factor in the development of enamel erosion. Although, there are foods and drinks that provide nutrients that remineralize teeth in natural way, bovine milk is one of the diet that researchers conclude that it has the ability to remineralize human enamel.
Recently, the demand for plant based milk beverages has been gaining popularity and used as an alternative to cow’s milk especially for those have milk allergy or lactose intolerance and /or vegetarians. So the aim of this study is to compare the effect of bovine milk and some plant based milk on enamel erosion. Coca-Cola® beverages were used to induce enamel erosion in this study.
Forty two extracted sound human mandibular first premolars were used in this study. The used teeth were distributed over three groups. These three groups were;
 Control negative group where teeth were not subjected to any treatment but only soaked in distilled water.
 Control positive group where teeth were subjected to Coca-Cola® beverage. Experimental group where teeth were divided into four subgroups and subjected to Coca-Cola®then soaked in certain type of milk, these four subgroups were;
Subgroup (1):
In which teeth were soaked in bovine milk after it has been subjected toCoca-Cola®.
Subgroup (2):
In which teeth were soaked in soy milk after it has been subjected to Coca-Cola®.
Subgroup (3):
In which teeth were soaked in almond milk after it has been subjected to Coca-Cola®.
Subgroup (4):
In which teeth were soaked in oat milk after it has been subjected to Coca-Cola®.
1- The teeth of all groups were prepared for SEM analysis to detect enamel surface alternations.
2- Quantitative analysis of calcium and phosphorous weight percentage of the studied surfaces of all teeth were carried by an x -ray micro analyzers equipment (EDAX).The results of this study showed that exposure to Coca-Cola® beverage significantly altered enamel superficial surface structure causing irregular enamel surface, erosive lesions and cracks as well as noticeable decrease of the calcium and phosphorous level of teeth as compared to control negative one.
The results revealed that bovine and plant based milk has a reparative effect on eroded enamel. Furthermore, almond milk was better than bovine and all tested plant based milk in remineralizing enamel surface after Coca-Cola® alternation.
The qualitative analysis demonstrated noticeable recover in enamel surface defects and it was confirmed by the quantitative analysis which in its turn showed significant increase in calcium and phosphorous levels that helped in teeth remineralization.
All these findings were supported by statistical analysis results.
