Abstract The soya bean based N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)thiophene-2-carboxamide (HETCA)-modified alkyd resins and N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)furan-2-carboxamide (HEFCA)-modified alkyd resins are prepared by partial replacement of glycerol with each (HETCA) 3 and (HEFCA) 4, respectively, with both phthalic anhydride (PA) and Soya bean oil fatty acids (FA). The HETCA- and HEFCA-modified alkyd resins were entered in final coating formulations and their performances were evaluated and compared using ASTM which involved the measurement of their phyisco-mechanical properties. In general, the results show that the modification enhances both phyisco-mechanical and chemical properties. Additionally, morpholino(thiophen-2-yl)methanone 5 and morpholino(furan-2-yl)methanone 6 are prepared and their anticorrosion effect is investigated by use them as an additive with standard (commercial) alkyd resin in zinc phosphate primer formulations, and as an additive with some of previously prepared HETCA- and HEFCA-modified alkyd resins in the same primer formulations. In general, both of corrosion inhibitors (5) and (6) improve the corrosion resistance at dosage 0.5 % of the total formulation weight. The addition of morpholino(thiophen-2-yl)methanone 5 to a certain sample of HETCA-modified alkyd resins gives the maximum corrosion resistance by Synergism. |
