Abstract

Cannabis is the most popular drug of abuse because of its low price and cultivation and availability in many areas in Egypt. Moreover, it is wrongly believed by lay persons that cannabis being a plant is not prohibited by religion, they thought that religious prohibition of alcohol has not completely prevent the use of other psychoactive substance. It is well known that driving under the influence of cannabis increases the risk of involvement in road traffic accidents. This risk could be estimated by using data on prevalence of drugs of abuse among injured drivers in road traffic accidents. Worldwide road traffic injuries cause more than 1.2 million deaths every year, and are the leading cause of death among those aged from15 to 44 years. Eighty percent (80%) of these deaths occurred in low and middle income countries.
