Abstract Blood transfusion services is an important part of modern healthcare system which is needed for efficient medical care. Blood transfusion centers are expected to develop a system of audit that is appropriate to their quality standards and provided services. The overall aim of the study is to assure standardized performance of all operation procedures in the blood bank of Benha University Hospitals. This study was conducted at the blood bank of Benha university hospitals in Benha city, kalyobia governorate. The study included all physicians actively working in blood bank (6) and all actively working nurses (22) participated in the study. The study was carried out during a period of six months starting from first of November 2011 until thirty of April 2012. The study was conducted in 3 phases: Phase 1 comprised an observational study to describe processes related to donating blood and to assess knowledge of the blood bank staff about performance standards; Phase 2 was an intervention program aiming at improving the knowledge of the blood bank staff about performance standards and also improving the process of selecting donors while phase 3; included an evaluation of the intervention program by re-assessment of knowledge of the blood bank staff and their performance. The study included 6 physicians, 2 (33.3%) males and 4 (66.7%) females, 3 of which had master, only 1 with doctorate and 2 residents, ranging between 24 and 33 years old of mean 28.83±3.48 and working 111 from 1 to 5 years. It also included 22 nurses, 2 (9.1%) males and 20 (90.9%) females, ranging between 22 and 52 years old of mean 39.95±8.23 and working from 2 to 34years |
