Abstract The Upper Cretaceous to Lower Tertiary sedimentary sequence of the central Eastern Desert is described in two land sections in Gabel Duwi and Gabel Atshan. A total of 360 samples were investigated with respect to lithostrstigraphy, calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy, facies analysis and magneto-susceptibility cyclostratigraphy. Lithostratigraphically, the studied successions are represented by five rock units arranged from base to top as: Duwi, Dakhla, Tarawan, Esna and Thebes formations. Petrographic examination of the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Eocene sediments has led to the identification of six main microfacies associations: Mudstone microfacies (micritic mudstone and foraminiferal mudstone), Wackestone microfacies (foraminiferal biomicrite wackestone, molluscan biomicrite wackestone, pelbiomicrite wackestone, dolomite and dolbiomicrite wackestone), Packstone microfacies (foraminiferal biomicrite packstone, biomicrite packstone and intra-biomicrite packstone), Siltstone microfacies, Phosphate microfacies and Chert microfacies. |
