Abstract

Medical education is recognized as one of the most stressful environments present, even more than other high education fields. Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of psychological problems such as stress, anxiety and depression among medical students than in general population and age matched peers. According to the WHO world health report 2002, psychological morbidity is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Psychological morbidity constitutes 3out of 10 of disability causes among people of age range 15-44 years old.
Depression was reported by the WHO (2004) to be a major global concern; with a global prevalence of 4-7%. It also reported in year 2013 to be the third leading cause of death globally among adolescents and was predicted by the WHO in 2001 to become the second leading cause of death and disability by 2020.
Obesity is a rising epidemic; according to a recent study conducted in the U.S.A (2012) 35.8% and 35.5% were the prevalence of obesity in the female and male populations respectively
The current study aimed to describe the prevalence of anxiety and depression among first, second and third undergraduate medical students attending Alexandria Faculty of Medicine and to assess their dietary behavior in the period of academic year 2015-2016
Specific objectives included estimation of prevalence of anxiety and depression among undergraduate medical students attending Alexandria Faculty of Medicine, as well as describing dietary habits among the enrolled undergraduate medical students and exploring the possible association of anxiety, depression and dietary behaviors among the enrolled undergraduate medical students.
To accomplish these aims, a descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted at Mowasah academic campus affiliated to Alexandria Faculty of Medicine. all students enrolled in the first, second and third academic grades at faculty of medicine, Alexandria University, Egypt who attended lectures at Mowasah academic building during the period of the field work starting from February and till the end of April 2016 were included in the study sample except those who had been diagnosed with having anxiety disorders or depression that required treatment, suffering from a metabolic or organic disease which requires a specific dietary plan e.g. diabetes, chron’s disease, renal/liver impairment, hyper/hypothyroidism…etc. or any student who was actively dieting during the period the study was conducted.
A self-administered questionnaire was handed out to the students to collect data on their socio-demographic characteristics and anthropometric measurements. A section was also included to rule out students meeting the exclusion criteria mentioned above.
Lectures were selected according to the timetable using a simple random technique and 600 students attending selected lectures were enrolled after being informed about the aim of the study and accepted to participate
