BACKGROUND:
The activation of the coagulation system might extend Ischemia/reperfusion (IR) which is one of the most common causes of acute kidney injury (AKI). Vitamin E could exert an inhibitory effect on blood coagulation. Thus, the outcome of vitamin E before or immediately after the induction of IR kidney injury on blood coagulation as a pathophysiological mechanism was investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
Female rats were administrated with single dose of vitamin E before or immediately after the induction of IR and the effects of vitamin E was assessed by the measurement of body and kidney weights, renal function and structure, PT, APTT, FDPs, CRP and MDA level.
RESULTS:
As regard coagulation parameters only IR group pretreated with vitamin E showed significant shortening in PT when compared to IR group. There was no improvement in renal function and structure of IR group pre or post treated with vitamin E when compared to IR group. IR rat groups pre and post treated with vitamin E showed significant increase in their kidney weights when compared to IR group, Additionally IR group post treated with vitamin E showed significant increase in kidney weight in comparison with IR group pretreated with vitamin E.
CONCLUSION:
Single dose of vitamin E as a preventive therapy or as a treatment was not associated with promising results as regards kidney function, structure and coagulation parameters.
Key Words: acute kidney injury; renal ischemia/reperfusion; coagulation; vitamin E.
