Abstract

The primary function of the blood is to supply oxygen, nutrients and constitutional
elements to tissues and to remove waste products. Transfusion of the blood is a frequent
hospital procedure. Globally, millions of blood and blood derivative units are transfused
for various medical and surgical conditions to replace lost products. Many risks are
associated with the complex process of blood transfusion administration. The adverse
events from transfusion of blood and its derivatives can be generally grouped as
.immunologic or infectious.
The transfusion practices of the nurses and child’s safety are integrally linked. The
nurses are responsible for the blood administration, the clinical assessment of the child and
prompt recognition of adverse events that require immediate intervention. Therefore, the
aim of the present study was to assess the pediatric nurses’ safety practices during blood
transfusion and its derivatives
The study was conducted at medical, surgical and dialysis inpatients departments and
Out-Patient Hematology Clinic at El Shatby University Children’s Hospital in Alexandria.
A convenient sample of one hundred nurses who gave direct child’s care during blood
transfusion or its derivatives regardless of their education, years of experience or their age
constituted the subjects.
A structured observational checklist was developed by the researcher to collect the
data. It included nurses and sick children biosocial data, nurses’ safety practices before,
during and after transfusion. Each nurse was observed individually once either at morning
or evening shift
