Abstract Medicines are the most common treatment used in health care and contribute to significant improvements in health when used appropriately. However, medicine use can also be associated with harm and the common use of medicines means they are associated with more errors and adverse events than any other aspect of health care. Medication errors can occur at every step in the process from the mind of the prescriber to administration to the patient and beyond. Such medication errors constitute a major problem in hospitalized patients and can prolong hospital stay and lead to significant patient morbidity and even death. Medication errors in cardiovascular settings need special attention, and it can be assumed that patients with acute cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at an increased risk for negative consequences from medication errors such as inappropriate therapeutic management and high associated cost. No previous studies examining medication errors have been conducted at the coronary care unit (CCU) of Assiut University Hospital. Aim of the study The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and types of medication errors in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) at the CCU. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee at the faculty of Medicine of Assuit University. |
