Abstract This thesis is concerned with highlighting the experimental aspectsof Mac Wellman’s works. It aims to give an analysis of the difficultiesfound in two of his plays and to interpret their meanings for a better munderstanding. The plays examined are The Difficulty of Crossing a Field (2008), and The School for Devils (2004). Through a close reading of the texts this thesis attempts to show Wellman’s experimental technique and his vision of how theatre should be, concentrating on his adaptation of certain techniques related to different literary styles such as the Classical Greek Drama, the Absurd Theatre, the Musical Theatre, and Metadrama. Wellman’s texts can be considered postmodern avant-garde dramas for most of the postmodern and avant-garde features (which are similar to a great extent) are applicable to his style such as mixture of genres, ambiguity, complexity, circularity, fragmentation, and distinctive use of language. Wellman rebels against all the generic theatrical conventions that govern a plays composition. His plays simple, but they perplex the readers/audiences with their multi-faceted interpretation. As a language poet, Wellman does not want to write for passive audience, he wants his audience to participate in the construction of the meaning of the play, and to exert extra effort in bringing the meaning out of the play. |
