Abstract

Objective: This study aimed at assessment of the effect of massage therapy for 5 consecutive days on growth parameters (weight, height, head circumference, Pondral index, growth velocity), body composition assessed by DXA scan and serum adiponectin in stable preterm infants. Material and method: Stable preterm infants in the NICU awaiting for sustained pattern of weight gain were included in the study at 35 weeks old. Infants were randomly assigned to MT or standard therapy control groups using a computer generated random numbers list. The attending neonatologists prescribed treatment for both groups, but the MT group also received MT. Conclusion: The current study concluded that applying massage therapy had a positive effect on premature neonates’ cumulative weight gain, mean weight gain, cumulative length gain, mean length gain, growth velocity. In addition MT lead to increase arm fat, trunk fat%, and trunk total mass assessed by DXA scan. It also increases adiponectin level.
