Abstract

Introduction: Malignancy and caecal inflammation frequently form masses which are virtually indistinguishable and surgeons are often challenged to determine the pathologic origin of these masses. There are many reports in the literature that have addressed this promiscuousness, and right hemicolectomy was done because of the concern of possible malignancy.
Aim of Work: Our work aims to study the recent trends for management of ceacal mass by reviewing the differential diagnosis as regard surgical anatomy, pathophysiology of different etiologies and surgical management including different modalities of treatment.
Conclusion: The extent of colon resection depends upon the disease process being treated. Benign lesions are generally removed using a segmental resection or hemicolectomy. For localized benign conditions of the colon (eg, trauma, diverticular disease, and inflammatory bowel disease), a segmental resection with a primary anastomosis in well-vascularized colon and a limited mesenteric resection can be performed. Malignant lesions located in the appendix, caecum, and ascending colon can be resected by a right hemicolectomy.
