Abstract

Background: Antibiotics overuse is a global concern due to its contribution to the rising burden of antibiotic resistance. The issue is multi-factorial, but the public awareness earns a greater importance in countries with less antibiotics use stewardship as Egypt where over 30% of antibiotic use is unprescribed.
Objectives: were to asses Knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of parents regarding antibiotic use for their children, and to identify factors affecting knowledge, attitude and practice of parents about antibiotic use for their infants and children.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out in pediatric outpatient clinic of Ain Shams University hospitals and first settlement family center clinic on randomly selected 350 parents using a semi-constructed interview questionnaire.
Results: confusion regarding different infections was noticed, with only 16.9% of parents were attentive to the truth that antibiotics doesn’t treat viral infections. About 28.9% were not aware that antibiotics may cause side effects to their children. Only 22% were oriented with the term resistant bacteria, though 74.6% knew its general concept. About 28.9% stated that they never received information about antibiotics. Forty two percent reported using unprescribed antibiotics and 40.6% used left-over antibiotics for their children. Higher education, socioeconomic status, age and work status had influential impact on knowledge, with no significant impact on practice.
Conclusion: The study findings detected areas of misconceptions and inappropriate use that can aid in the assessment of present parental awareness about antibiotics, providing insight for further educational interventions for both parents and physicians aiming at judicious use of antibiotics as an effort towards less antibiotic resistance.
