Abstract

The River Nile has played an extremely important role in the civilization, life and history of the Egyptian Nation. The Rosetta Branch represents the main freshwater stream on the western boundary in the Nile Delta of Egypt. It is considered as one of the main sources for drinking, irrigation and industrial activities. Water quality status of the Rosetta Branch has been deteriorated in the last decades due to the aggressive human activities. Domestic and agricultural wastewaters from several drains and industrial effluents from the industrial companies at Kafr El-Zayat city are the main sources of pollution. The main objective of this research work is investigating the water quality management of the Rosetta Branch at Kafr El-Zayat city. For that, a water quality monitoring program was planned, including each key site of Rosetta Branch at Kafr El-Zayat city. Monitoring system is based on field sampling and laboratory tests to secure water quality records for the study area. Thirtytwo water samples were collected from the eight monitoring stations along the Rosetta Branch at Kafr El-Zayat city and from the outlet of Tala Drain. These samples were collected during the period from November 2014 to August 2015. The eighteen measured parameters were: physical (water temperature, turbidity and total dissolved solid); chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, salinity, conductivity, sulfate, phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, chloride, iron and manganese); and biological (fecal coliform and total algae). The records confirmed the phenomenon of the death of fish in the Rosetta Branch during the summer due to the relatively low concentrations of DO.
