Abstract Objective: to study oxidative stress in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients and its correlation with the disease activity and damage index and the presence of atherosclerosis in SLE patients. Study design: case control cross sectional study. Study setting: the study was conducted in rheumatology and internal medicine department in AIN SHAMS UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL Patients: Thirty SLE patients were enrolled and thirty matching controls , complete medical history, and examination, measuring MDA and TAC levels in the serum, SLAM scoring for the patients, and carotid duplex, lipid profile and routine lab investigations were done Results: Malondialdhyde (MDA) was higher in SLE patients compared to controls and Total antioxidant capacity TAC was higher in SLE patients compared to controls Malondialdhyde (MDA) was positively correlated with atherosclerosis and ESR and cholesterol level, triglycerides level and LDL level and fasting blood sugar level. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was negatively correlated with atherosclerosis and cholesterol level, triglycerides level and fasting blood sugar level. There was no statistical correlation between MDA and disease activity and no statistical correlation between TAC and disease activity. Conclusion: Oxidative stress marker MDA is positively correlated with LDL, cholesterol, triglycerides and atherosclerosis TAC was negatively correlated with atherosclerosis and cholesterol level, triglycerides level and fasting blood sugar level. MDA and TAC are negatively correlated in SLE patients. |
