Abstract

Orthopedic surgery remains a mainstay of lifelong O.I. management, in a complementary function with medical treatment and physical rehabilitation. Osteotomies of long bones with implanting of intramedullary rods are done to correct the deformity that decrease the ambulatory function and to manage fracture recurrence.
Intramedullary rods are two different types, telescopic and non- telescopic rods, telescopic rods include Bailey-Dubow, Sheffield, Fassier-Duval and interlocking rods. Non-telescopic rods include Rush rod, Nancy rod and kirschner wire.
The aim of the study was to evaluate and compare between the published results of treatment of O.I. using intramedullary telescopic vs non-telescopic rods, and discuss their benefits and complications.
Fourteen studies were identified for analysis. Eligible subjects were enrolled between 1984 and 2015. There were 208 subjects (599 long bones) analyzed with 51.9% female patients and 48.1% male patients.
The rate of revision in non-telescopic rods was more than the rate of revision in telescopic rods. No non-union was reported in all papers than had been reviewed. Bent rods were detected in telescopic rods and almost nil in non-telescopic rods.
