Abstract

School emergency planning directs staff and student preparation and response.
Knowing how to respond during a crisis helps everyone remain calm, understand their role,
and act as safely and efficiently as possible. Emergency planning must include all risks,
crises, and emergencies schools may encounter. Developing and maintaining a safe school
environment is the responsibility of the entire school community, including families drills
and exercises that should be preceded by training seminars or workshops, where
articipants are trained on their emergency responsibilities. Following training in more
ormal settings, exercises can extend the training to provide opportunities to use existing
kills and to learn new ones. Exercising the emergency management plan using simulations
rovides the opportunity for testing skills and knowledge to identify strengths and
-eaknesses; learning new skills; practicing decision-making, techniques, and
ommunications; determining gaps in planning and procedures for management attention;
d critically examining methods and procedures to stimulate revisions and modifications
:0 the emergency management plan.
