Abstract
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the efficacy of uterine tamponade using condom catheter balloon in treatment of atonic postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
DESIGN:
Randomized prospective case control trial.
SETTING:
Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital.
POPULATION:
Two groups of women, who presented postpartum hemorrhage refractory to first-line treatment (uterine massage and oxytocin).
METHODS:
Uterine balloon tamponade with a condom catheter was applied in women who were unresponsive to uterotonics and bimanual compression; patients with successful catheter placement were included in analyses. The primary outcome was successful control (reduction or cessation) of bleeding.
RESULTS:
There was less blood loss in the study group when compared to control group, However the difference was statistically insignificant (p-value = 0.181).There was also less time to control bleeding in the study group when compared to control group, However the difference was statistically insignificant (p-value = 0.076).
Regarding success rate, the success rate in the study group was high when compared with the control group but still statistically insignificant (p-value = 0.026).
CONCLUSIONS:
Condom catheters control PPH effectively and quickly. It is a simple, inexpensive and safe method of conserving the reproductive capacity along with saving the life of women with primary PPH.
