Abstract

Adenomyosis is a common gynecological disorder characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue into the myometrium. The precise etiology and pathophysiology of adenomyosis is still unclear. The current study was conducted to clarify that if there is a difference in the behavior between the adenomyotic and endometrial tissues. The differences between the adenomyotic foci and endometria proper were studied in the same specimen to compare between them histopathologically and immuno-histochemically using estrogen and progesterone receptors as markers. The study was carried out on 83 hystrectomy speicemen diagnosed as having adenomyosis. They differed from each other in different histopathological patterns and immuno-histochemically in ER&PR expression.
Key words: adenomyosis, estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, immuno-histochemistry.
