Abstract

Speech ABR is a new diagnostic tool that reflects speech encoding at the level of the brainstem. This study was conducted on 30 patients suffering from post-stroke aphasia diagnosed clinically & confirmed by CT scan in addition to 30 normal healthy adult volunteers. They were examined within the first week post stroke. The age range was between 20 and 50 years in the control group with the mean age 34.47 years while the aphasic patients aged from 25-50 years.
In click ABR, the absolute latencies of wave V were within normal values in the control and the study groups, and there was nosignificant difference between the latency of wave V of click and S-ABR in both groups.
In S-ABR, all waves were detected in control group and they were within the normal values. While the study group showed exhibited abnormalneural synchrony affecting the source elements (fundamental frequency) (waves D, E, F and O).However, there was no effect on the filter elements (transients).while the degree and the type of aphasia had no significant effect on speech ABR latencies.
On comparison the control with the follow up groups, there was non-significant difference in all S-ABR waves.Neuroplastic changes following stroke had effect on S-ABR waves; this exhibited on comparison the S-ABR in the study with the follow up groups, there was difference in most S-ABR waves (wave D, E, F and O).
In the current study we found that aphasic patients exhibited within normal click evoked ABRs latencies however, speech evoked ABRs showed abnormal results in the form of delayed latencies of the sustained response.
